Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) relies on the strong localized electric near-field at the surface of plasmonic metal nanoparticles. Recent work has shown that it is possible to detect single molecules and resolve intricate molecule vibrations with atomic resolution, something that requires that the near-field is confined to a few Ångstroms. Here we will provide a short overview over the latest developments in modeling SERS and TERS with a emphasis on understanding the effects of the highly confined near-field.
