Today’s students are tomorrow’s chemists, making it essential to give students the tools and knowledge necessary for creating healthy and safe products and processes for humans and the environment. In this presentation we will share how green chemistry and sustainability was effectively integrated in a high school chemistry curriculum utilizing a variety of resources, inquiry-based experiments with engineering components, and problem solving opportunities. Strategies for making connections between sustainability and societal concerns were leveraged to increase student engagement while meeting state and national standards. Students were given the opportunity to ask and answer questions of their choosing in relation to sustainability through their understanding of chemistry and scientific processes. Their projects were shared at a poster session at the University of Minnesota with other students and university faculty. Student feedback through assessments in AP and general chemistry classrooms will be shared including the success of a student who pursued chemistry in college and involved themselves in green and sustainable research projects.
