Bisphenol A (BPA) has shown to be harmful to life because of its similar chemical structure to hormones. BPA has also shown to affect the endocrine system and ultimately cause infertility. BPA was widely used in plastic bottles and other plastics for many years before it was found to be harmful. This chemical has entered water streams such as river lakes and even sewer systems. Since BPA has entered these sewage systems it raises a concern to lower these concentrations in our water systems. The detection of BPA in water is critical in order to limit its exposure to life.  In this work we develop a microfluidic device that would allow the rapid detection of BPA in water. The overall goal is to construct a BPA detector that can be integrated with water purification systems. The microfluidic system is composed of two essential components: a hydrogel and an aptamer. The hydrogel is used to retain a BPA sensitive aptamer inside a microfluidic channel. In this presentation we will demonstrate how we are able to retain the aptamer in the system through the use of hydrogels. We will further demonstrate the BPA-Aptamer binding using fluorescence spectroscopy.
