Biologists regularly use solutions formulated to protect cells prior to low temperature or cryogenic storage. But how do these solutions function to protect the cells? Many of the formulations were crafted decades ago and although they sometimes work to preserve some cells, they are far from perfect. We are exploring how solutions developed to protect plant cells interact with cell walls and membranes. We aim to develop quantitative methods that enable direct and universal measurement of molecular cryoprotecting agents in cells and to use results from quantitative measurements to develop protocols for predicting formulations that have high probability of effectiveness for cryopreservation. This talk will present the avenues we are pursuing to measure interactions of molecular cryoprotecting agents interacting with cells.  <br/>
