A number of tools for formative assessment (concept inventories or diagnostic tests) were recently developed and published in the chemistry education research literature. More than 40 papers that report the development of original concept inventories were identified. To assess the impact of these instruments on chemistry education research community, we investigated patterns in studies that cite the development papers. The patterns were classified based on claims that were supported in citing papers with citations of the development papers. “Field” pattern was observed when a citing paper uses the development paper to establish study context on need. “Methodological” citations were used to justify the use of a certain data collection method or interpretation of results. “Instrumental” citation is the least frequent type of citation observed in cases where a citing paper reports the use of an instrument or its parts from the development paper to collect data. Results of citation analysis will be presented, and methodological features of the most impactful inventories will be discussed.
