Chemical recycling of CO2 with H2 has attracted substantial attention in the past decade since it is considered as a highly efficient and sustainable way to achieve CO2 conversion to produce valuable chemical stocks and useful fuel to meet the growing energy demand. Pt-based catalysts are proved to be promising candidates for highly efficient CO2 hydrogenation to selectively produce CO. Despite numerous experimental and theoretical works about Pt-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation, the mechanism for CO2 hydrogenation with Pt-based catalysts is not clearly understood so far. Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (APXPS) combined with synchrotron light source provides a good opportunity to explore the chemical state of the catalyst and adsorbates with different probing depths, which is of great help for us to advance the understanding of catalytic reaction mechanism. By applying the APXPS system in ALS, we monitored CO2 activation and the whole process of CO2 hydrogenation on Pt catalysts under variable conditions incluing different atmosphere and temperature, providing a clear and convincing mechanism for CO2 activation and conversion on Pt surface. This work is not only beneficial for advancing our understanding about CO2 activation and hydrogenation on Pt-based catalysts, but also instructive for the optimal design of novel catalysts.
