Owing to their myriad size- and shape-dependent magnetic, electronic, catalytic, optical, and mechanical properties, colloidal inorganic nanocrystals are powerful building blocks for the synthesis of highly tunable materials.  Many strategies have been developed to assemble nanocrystals into three-dimensional architectures with exceptional structural control, but the vast majority of assemblies synthesized to date are either close packed or held together by flexible organic ligands that collapse upon solvent removal.  As a result, the incorporation of nanocrystals into crystalline materials with accessible internal porosity in the solid state remains a synthetic challenge.  Such porous nanocrystal-based materials would feature unique and highly tunable properties derived from individual nanocrystals and their collective interactions that would not be difficult to achieve in conventional porous materials.  Here, we will describe recent efforts to use rigid organic ligands to assemble inorganic nanocrystals into structures that feature permanent porosity in the solid state, long-range order, and controlled interparticle distances.
