Alkenyl arenes are important precursors for fine chemical synthesis as well as for the preparation of plastics, elastomers and surfactants. Currently, alkenyl arenes are mainly produced by initial arene alkylation using acid-based catalysts, generally either a Lewis acid (e.g., AlCl<sub>3</sub>) chloride with a Bronsted acid (e.g., HF) or acidic zeolite materials, followed by dehydrogenation. Since the arene alkylation generates carbocationic intermediates that undergo electrophilic aromatic substation, when using mono-substituted olefins (e.g., propene, 1-pentene, etc.) the reaction favors branched alkyl arene products. We have developed a Rh catalyzed arene alkenylation that is generally selective for products that give 1-aryl alkanes upon hydrogenation (i.e., the anti-Markovnikov product). In this study, we have extended the catalysis using simple Pd(II) salts as catalyst precursors. The influence of temperature, olefin concentration, and additives on reaction selectivity are investigated. The presentation will provide comparisons for related reactions using Rh catalysts.<br/>
