Magnetic refrigeration is a useful application of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), the phenomenon by which magnetic materials can change temperature when exposed to an adiabatic magnetization or demagnetization. For this technology to become commercially viable, either new materials with pronounced MCE must be discovered, or existing materials must be modified to improve their magnetic properties to meet efficiency demands. The intermetallic phase, TlFe3Te3, is a potential candidate as it has a magnetic ordering temperature at 220 K, a moderate MCE (-ΔSm = 7.02 Jkg-1K-1), and low magnetic and thermal hysteresis. The structural motif provides the ability to tune the properties by substitution of alkali metals for the thallium atoms. Tl1-xAxFe3Te3 (A = alkali metal) phases have been produced using several synthetic methods and have been characterized through crystallography, EDS, and SQUID magnetometry. These substitutions have resulted in changes to the magnetic properties including the ordering temperature, anisotropy, hysteresis, and MCE.
