Core-shell nanostructured Au-FeOx@SiO2 with 3-4 nm Au-FeOx cores and microporous SiO2 shells were prepared by a water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion method. A compositional control of the Au-FeOx core was achieved by a co-precipitation method; meanwhile, microporous SiO2 shells with tunable thickness were obtained by hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS. The obtained Au-FeOx@SiO2 showed a significant catalytic performance in CO oxidation, in comparision to Au@SiO2. The synthetic strategy contained both fabrication of the active Au-FeOx interface as well as the enhanced porosity of the SiO2 shells, which facilitates the transpassing of reactants and products. The Au-FeOx@SiO2 structure provided a fine model for building up nanoreactors with both high catalytic activity and good thermal stability.
