Porous composites with defined nanostructure are attractive materials for energy storage applications. This presentation will discuss the utilization of polymer templates for genrating various porous composites in energy storage application. One example is a nanoporous polymer template with gyroid nanochannels. The polymer template was obtained from the self-assembly of degradable block copolymer, polystyrene-<i>b</i>-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA), followed by the hydrolysis of PLLA blocks. Templated electroless plating followed by calcination was conducted to create precisely controlled Ni/NiO gyroid nanostructure. After carbon coating, well-interconnected nanoporous gyroid Ni/NiO/C nanocomposite can be successfully fabricated. The gyroid nanoporous Ni/NiO/C nanocomposite electrodes exhibited high specific capacity at various rates and excellent cyclability. This universal approach for constructing nanostructured electrode was also used in supercapacitor, lithium ion capacitors and electrochemical catalysts which will be dicuseed in this presentation.
