Emissive, low-toxicity nanomaterials have gained attention for use in new phosphors of commercial display devices. Specifically, indium phosphide, and III-V nanomaterials more broadly, compare favorably with cadmium selenide in their optoelectronic properties and present the possibility of highly emissive, color-pure nanomaterials with low environmental toxicity. Challenges remain in establishing narrow emission, high photoluminescent quantum yield, and stability over a range of environmental conditions. Understanding the mechanism of nucleation and growth of indium phosphide nanomaterials is essential in developing new materials with improved photophysical properties for use in display devices. Here, we will describe new insights into the growth mechanism of indium phosphide nanomaterials and the role that molecular InP clusters play as single-source precursors. In-situ spectroscopic measurements were used to study the conversion of clusters to larger nanomaterials, which is consistent with a mechanism of cluster dissolution followed by re-nucleation. This understanding was then applied to the synthesis of new III-V by using cation doping, alloying, and related methods to design highly emissive materials.
