Imines of 2-amino-benzothiazole and derivatives were synthesized using microwave assisted synthesis efficiently. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic methods such as NMR, IR, UV-vis, fluorescence and X-ray. These compounds showed strong luminescence in the solid state. Due to their structural relationship with reported compounds that showed to be sensitive and selective sensor for cyanide, we investigated the properties of these compounds as anion and cation sensors. (E)-2-((benzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol was investigated as anion (cyanide) sensor and cation (aluminum zinc and iron) sensor aqueous medium. Cyanide and hydroxide induces colorimetric change from pale yellow to dark yellow while other anions caused no significant change. It enhances the absorption at wavelengths 385 nm and 425 nm. Acidic anions H2PO4- and H2AsO4- displayed significant interference with the interaction of cyanide indication a hydrogen bonding or deprotonation mechanism of action. Fluorescence studies confirmed the UV-vis studies of the selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor as well. The detection limit was within WHO allowed values. In conclusion, these Schiff bases are potential probes for detection of cyanide in contaminated environmental samples.
