Nitrosyl (HNO) and nitric oxide (NO) are small signaling molecules with significant roles in mammalian physiology, cardiovascular relaxation, enzymatic activity regulation to regulating neurological functions, transported through coordination with heme group. The bond formation between heme group and NO or HNO varies based upon the arrangement of electrons during bonding, influenced by the porphyrin scaffold, coordination number, and the final axial ligand. Despite the structural resemblance to well-known NO, our knowledge of the formation, physiological role and reactivity of HNO within biological systems is limited because HNO is intrinsically unstable and spontaneously dimerizes to form N2O and water. Due to this instability, even in presence of weak nucleophiles and transition metals, the HNO system has proven difficult to investigate. The purpose of this study is to prepare a model that mimics the bonding in non-heme iron complexes using the synthetic model, [Ru(t-Bu4saloph)(NO)(L)]n+ (t-Bu4saloph = [N,N-Bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-diaminobenzene]; L= neutral 2-electron donor, n = 1; L= anionic 1-electron donor, n = 0) and investigate the redox chemistry in presence of H+, H. and H- using voltammetric methods. The data collected will be used to evaluate the mechanistic consequences of electron-transfer in these model systems.
