Solvent based technologies are the only technologies currently being deployed for the post-combustion CO2capture. Various CO2capture processes have been developed including aqueous amines such as monoethanolamine (MEA) or diethanolamine (DEA). They display low CO2-rich viscosity, fast kinetics, and favorable thermodynamics however their energy requirements are prohibitively high. Our group at PNNL is working towards identifying water lean transformational solvent and developing the fundamental learning of how to improve these formulations by identifying molecular-level properties such as viscosity and regeneration energy.We have recently identified a new energetically efficient water-lean amine-based solvent for CO2capture by the deliberate placement of hydrogen bonding and tuning of the acid/base equilibria. These amine-based solvents exhibited high gravimetric CO2capacity (17-20 wt%) and formed liquid carbamates. They displayed significantly lower CO2-rich solvent viscosities (~300 cP) and were regenerated at low temperatures (70-100°C) which means lower grade heat can be used for the regeneration. This solvent class exhibited excellent recyclability over multiple CO2absorption and regeneration cycles but suffered from volatility issues. We are currently designing amine-based formulations which retain lower viscosity but possess reduced volatility. Design, development, synthesis, and performance of the newly developed non-volatile class of non-aqueous amine-based solvents with high CO2capture capacity will be presented in detail.
