Single molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecules that exist in a bistable magnetic state, with reversal of magnetization controlled by a thermally activated process. While SMMs have future implications in data storage and spintronics, they are currently limited by low operating temperatures. Fast through-barrier relaxation processes such as quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) lead to loss of magnetization when an applied magnetic field is removed. One strategy to minimize QTM, and thus increase blocking temperatures, is to couple lanthanide ions with a diffuse radical bridge, allowing for strong magnetic coupling between the hard lanthanide ions. While triply-reduced dinitrogen can serve as a radical bridge, it is serendipitous and cannot be rationally tuned. In this work, we demonstrate the use of organic radical bridges to achieve synthetic control of magnetic coupling.
