The development of new H-bonding organocatalysts for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) has facilitated the synthesis of new materials and new methods for ROP. Traditional H-bond mediated polymerizations are a hallmark of highly-controlled transformations but generally suffer from low activity. The multi-(thio)urea H-donors are a synthetically-flexible approach to H-bonding catalysts with high control and high activity, but very little is known about the structural traits of a successful catalyst. We report on a series of architecturally-diverse bis-(thio)urea H-bond donors for the ROP of lactones: the convergence of activity and selectivity.
