Despite the massive interest in lead-halide perovskite solar-cell absorbers, the AIBIIX3 (X = halide) lattice has proved restrictive for incorporating other metals. Finding analogs is crucial for understanding which features of the lead-perovskites lead to the materials' strong sunlight absorption and long carrier lifetimes. Double perovskites of the form A2BB′X6 provide a more accommodating platform for substitutions. Although most halide double perovskites exhibit large bandgaps, we have recently found methods to systematically target small-bandgap compositions and direct gap transitions. I will share our understanding of how to manipulate the band structure of halide double perovskites through i) dilute impurity alloying, ii) stoichiometric metal substitution, and iii) dimensional reduction. Our studies have led us to double perovskites with similar properties to the lead perovskites, allowing us to articulate design rules for obtaining small bandgaps and long-lived carriers.
