Halide perovskites are more compressible than their oxide counterparts by an order of magnitude. Importantly, halide perovskites remain crystalline under GPa-scale pressures, allowing us to study their structural evolution with compression. Understanding correlations between pressure-induced structural, optical, and electronic changes allows us to use compression as a tuning knob for accessing new material properties. In this talk, I will discuss the dramatic effects of applied pressure, of up to 65 GPa, on both 2D and 3D halide perovskites: from piezochromism and mechanical suppression of Jahn-Teller distortions to suppression of excited-state lattice dynamics and the onset of metallic character with bandgap closure.
