A simple and efficient synthetic method is used to prepare the porphyrin based theranostic agents for dual functionality as photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and as contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This work briefly describes the synthesis of fluorous porphyrins substituted with three thioglucose units that target diseases such as cancer and one 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol. This compound contains 33 F atoms which can play a significant role in modulating signal intensity and enhancing tissue contrast in F-19 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This compound may have potential to be a clinically relevant theranostic agent, offering exciting possibilities for simultaneous MRI imaging and photodynamic treatment of tumors. Various physicochemical methods will be used to characterize this conjugate both as an MRI contrast agent and as a photosensitizer such as cell incubation studies, dynamic light scattering (DLS), singlet oxygen studies and fluorescence studies. These studies will facilitate the development of enabling technologies based on these new core porphyrinoid platforms for simultaneous detection, imaging, and treatments of cancer. The development of this work provides a relevant background for bionanotechnology and nanomedicine applications as a multifunctional system with combined diagnostics and therapeutics
