The modular synthesis of tris(amido)amine ligands starting from inexpensive nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) has been developed. This synthetic approach has been used to generate a variety of nitrilotriacetamide and tris(anilido)amine ligands. Alternatively, dioxopiperazines generated from NTA can be used to yield mixed bis(anilido)(alkylamido)amines. The application of this approach toward the generation of tethered bis(tren) ligands will be discussed. The metalation chemistry of these tren ligands and the reactivity of their complexes, including the role of these complexes in metal-mediated nucleophilic aromatic substitution, will be presented.<br/>
