Carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, generated from fossil fuel combustion is a major contributor to global warming. There is a growing demand to bring about new generation catalysts that can mitigate the release of CO2 into ambient air. Reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction which involves two competing steps: the reduction of CO2 into water and carbon monoxide (CO) or it’s complete reduction into methane (CH4) are two routes in which CO2 can be used. The main reaction product, CO, is a useful reagent in methanol synthesis and can be used as a carbon source for the production of long-chain hydrocarbons via the Fisher-Tropsh process. The reduction of CO2 into CO is non-stoichiometric and requires an excess of hydrogen in the effluent streams, which may tandemly cause the unfavorable formation of CH4. Alloys supported on mesoporous silicates have shown good catalytic activity and high selectivity for CO production. The activity is dependent on accessibility to active sites. Here, we explore the role of Pt/Ni alloys with varying Pt:Ni ratios in the catalytic performance, and correlate the dependence of Pt/Ni intermetallic phases on catalytic performance using a multimodal approach. The dynamic changes associated with reaction progression are correlated to the catalyst activity and nature of active sites. The high performance associated with the Pt/Ni supported systems is due to the favorable synergetic interactions between the support and the Pt/Ni phases over the catalysts monometallic counterpart.
