Control of the micro-environment in the active site of metalloproteins is known to be a key factor in regulating function. Biomimetic small-molecule metal complexes are often designed to investigate the effects of the primary coordination sphere on function. However, interactions within the secondary coordination sphere, such as hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), also contribute to the overall properties of metal complexes. Efforts to understand these effects are still emerging and lag behind what is known about the role of the primary coordination sphere. We are interested in design and prepare metal complexes that establish intramolecular H-bond networks within C3-symmetric ligand frameworks to help stabilize the binding of exogenous ligands. By investigating the individual properties of a series of complexes, we can gain information on the importance of the intramolecular H-bond interaction on function. This presentation will describe a study into the binding of ammonia and amine compounds to an iron complex with a symmetrical tripodal ligand containing phosphinic amide groups. The preparation and structural properties of these complexes will be described that illustrates the role of intramolecular H-bonds on their properties. Further discussions will examine the oxidative chemistry associated with these complexes.
