The purpose of the procedure was to bring an active learning tactic into a large lecture situation. Educators often fear using active learning in large groups; the goal of the authors was to make the sheer number of students involved into a feature rather than an impediment. The large class size allowed for an effective demonstration of the concept of concentrations as students individually role-played reactants and as groups simulated concentrations. A survey completed immediately afterwards reveals their perceptions of the usefulness of this technique.
