Acquiring time-resolved spectra from IR to UV with single photon sensitivity in a single setup is a dream come true for most spectroscopists. We have developed decay associated Fourier spectroscopy (DAFS) to do just that: obtain picosecond time-resolved photoluminescence spectra from the shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1-2 μm) to UV (concurrently) with photon counting. We leverage a scanning Mach-Zehnder interferometer, superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) and Si single photon avalanche photodiodes to achieve this. We then extend the technique to include spatial imaging by coupling in the emission from a scanning epifluorescence microscope. DAFS opens many possibilities to study materials and processes with energies spanning the UV to SWIR, i.e. imaging singlet oxygen, monolayer black phosphorus, triplet emission from singlet fission, energy/charge transfer processes and deep trap states; thus allowing us to overcome many limitations of Si detector spectroscopies.
