Here, we study alkali metal-ion cycling behavior of TMD electrodes as potential high capacity materials for metal-ion batteries and supercapacitors. We show that electrochemical capacity and cycling efficiency of freestanding TMD electrodes is higher than traditional graphite and graphene oxide electrodes reported to date. Our results also highlight the challenges associated with capacity decay and voltage hysteresis in TMDs, which become evident after only few initial cycles. To overcome these issues, TMD sheets were functionalized with atomically thin layers of silicon-based inorganic polymer derived ceramic (PDC). PDC-functionalized TMDs show superior capacity retention over pristine nanosheets.
