Light is a powerful tool in chemistry that has been utilized as an energy source to elicit isomerization, charge transport, and the formation and destruction of covalent bonds. Excited by light as a stimulus, the newly formed ZAP group takes advantage of the band-gap intrinsic to organic chromophores to create macromolecular materials. In particular, we focus on the use of visible light, which offers a low energy and tunable alternative to traditional UV-based photochemical platforms. This presentation will describe new methods where photoexcitation is used to generate electronically active compounds.
