Previous literature has demonstrated the use of graphene oxide (GO) as a multi-functional crosslinker by utilizing the reaction between -NH2 groups of a telechelic polymer, such as aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxanes (NH2-PDMS), and epoxy groups on the surface of GO. As an extension of the previous work, a hybrid composite system containing fumed silica nanoparticles in combination with GO was chosen to improve the elastic modulus (Ec) and elasticity (εb) of the elastomer. This research, in particular, investigated the effect of two types of silica nanoparticles which differs in surface chemistry but similar in surface area: a pristine hydrophilic Aerosil® 300 and hexamethyldisilazane treated hydrophobic Aerosil® R 812 S. For example, Ec was 2.54±0.16 MPa and 2.51±0.03 MPa, and εb was 127±7% and 106±6% when 5 phr of Aerosil® 300 and 15 phr of Aerosil® 812 S was added to a 2 wt% GO/NH2-PDMS composite, respectively. The mechanical properties of these composites are similar in Ec, but 61 and 35% higher in εb when compared to a 3.0 wt% GO/NH2-PDMS composite without silica nanoparticles. In conclusion, silica nanoparticles are a cost-effective solution to partially substitute GOs while improving the elasticity of the material.
