Since conventional fossil-fuel-based energy production system has revealed the severe environmental problems, hydrogen is considered as an attractive alternative energy carrier. Hydrogen is mainly produced by steam reforming of natural gas or water gas shift (WGS) reaction of syngas after the gasification of coal or biomass. Especially, the WGS reaction is Cu-based catalytic reaction using binary Cu/ZnO or ternary Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 mixed oxide catalyst. Hydrogen is obtained through the reaction containing by-product carbon dioxide (CO2) and unconverted carbon monoxide (CO) so that additional separation and purification techniques such as pressure swing adsorption are required to produce high-purity hydrogen. When sorption-enhanced reaction (SER) concept is applied to WGS reaction, CO2 is removed by sorbent simultaneously with the WGS reaction and more high-purity hydrogen can be produced. To operate sorption-enhanced water gas shift (SE-WGS) reaction, it is necessary to develop Cu-based catalyst which maintains its catalytic activity even if it is homogeneously mixed with CO2 sorbent. In this study, Cu-Mg-Al hydrotalcite-based catalyst was newly developed through hydrothermal synthesis with the different type of Mg and Al precursors. The prepared catalyst was applied to the WGS reaction operated at between 250 and 400 °C and the effect of precursor type on catalytic activity was observed. Furthermore, the SE-WGS reaction was operated with a homogeneous mixture containing the prepared catalyst and the molten salt-promoted hydrotalcite-based CO2 sorbent.
