Multiply charged ions are prevalent in condensed-phase chemistry, but are less common in the gas phase. To further understand such systems, ‘model’ linear dicarboxylic acid dianions in the form –OOC–(CH2)n–COO– have been studied via photoelectron spectroscopy by the L.-S. Wang group. Due to the repulsive Coulomb barrier associated with these dianions, as evidenced in the observation of autodetached electrons, photoelectron spectroscopy alone is not enough to determine the dissociative photodetachment channel these dianions access. Photodetachment and autodetachment pathways will be investigated through the kinematically complete method of photoelectron-photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectroscopy, utilizing a PPC spectrometer specifically designed to study heavy and multiply-charged anions.
