Aldehyde compounds sensing three-dimensionally ordered macroporous silica (3DOM SiO2) were prepared by surface modification with aliphatic thiol siland (S1 3DOM SiO2). To enhance its selectivity for formaldehyde, the S1 surface was further decorated with [3-(2-Aminoethylamino) propyl]trimethoxysilane, resulting in an S2 3DOM SiO2. FTIR spectra of both functionalized materials exhibited doublets peaks at 2361 and 2358 cm-1 attributed to S-H bond of thiol group. Preliminary study of aldehyde compounds detection was carried out using acetaldehyde and formaldehydes solution. Chromogenic response was observed after adding the sensing materials in the solution resulting in colour alteration from colourless to blue solution. UV-VIS spectra revealed that the mixture of aldehyde compounds with either the S1 3DOM SiO2 or the S2 3DOM SiO2 exhibited an absorption peak at 644 nm. Both sensing materials, however, exhibited stronger colourimetric response to formaldehyde than that of aldehyde, making them promising materials to enhance their formaldehyde selectivity.
