Colloidal transition metal nanoparticles (M NPs) have been attracted considerable attention as highly active catalyst because of their inherently large surface area, being different from that of their relevant bulk metals. However, these metal NPs are prone to loss of catalytic activity owing to their precipitation/aggregation to bulk metals. To date, external stabilizers such as functionalized polymers, dendrimers, and supported metal oxides are generally applied to avoid aggregation of metal nanoparticles. In addition, reductants such as NaBH4 are generally utilized to prepare metal nanoparticles in a typical metal nanoparticles synthesis by means of the “bottom-up” method. Therefore, development of innovative preparation method for metal nanoparticles with minimum surface deactivation is highly desirable. In this presentation, we report solution synthesis of a variety of DMF-protected metal nanoparticles (M NPs). In these M NPs, DMF serve as surfactant, reductant, and stabilizer. These metal nanoparticles were characterized by various instrumental analysis such as HRTEM, DLS, XPS, and TG analysis. We demonstrated the use of these metal nanoparticles as a catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (Pd NPs), Mizoroki-Heck coupling (Pd NPs), Sonogashira coupling (Cu NPs), Ullmann coupling (Cu NPs), olefin hydrosilylation (Fe2O3 NPs), and b- and N-methylations using methanol as C1 source (Ir NPs). This presentation is based on results obtained from a project commissioned by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
