Analysis of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) can be tricky with having to make sure samples are stored at subzero temperatures and even under vacuum. Having a method that allows stabilisation of VSCs and thus reducing their volatility in situ would be advantageous. Previously mercury has been used by exploiting the thiol functionality to trap these compounds efficiently, when analyzing sulfur containing compounds in wine [1,2]. In1955 Gregory et al. reported the reaction of N-ethylmaleimides with sulfhydryl functional groups [3]. Previous literature with DBM has been focused on detecting thiol groups in biological molecules or disulfide bridging bioconjugation [4,5]. In this contribution the use of PEG-DBM has been studied when attempting to stabilise VSCs in situ after their production. With fluorescence, UV-Vis and HPLC all being used as a method of detection of the stabilized thiol product.
