Enzymes are characterized by an active site that is typically embedded deeply within the protein shell thus creating a nanoconfined reaction volume in which high turnover rates occur. We propose nanoparticles with etched substrate channels as a simplfied enzyme mimic, denominated nanozymes, for electrocatalysis. General strategies for the formation of nanozymes and branched nanoparticles and through chemical synthesis will be outlined. The results presented will include the formation of catalytic metals such platinum-nickel nanozymes that have discreate channels that mimic enzymes and branched faceted ruthenium particles for stable catalysts. The growth mechanism of how the particles form will also be presented along with HRTEM observations for example, Figure 1. Catalytic applications will be discussed with a focus on improved activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and improved stability for the oxygen evolution reaction.
