We investigate the corrosion mechanism of alloys and report on a study of nanoporosity formation upon dealloying of one or more of electrochemically reactive components of an alloy in molten salts. The resulting porous materials are attractive as functional materials. In our initial work, we have investigated the morphology, structure, and annealing response of porous Ni films synthesized via electrochemical dealloying of Fe1-xNix and Fe0.8-xCr0.2Nix in eutectic molten chloride salts at 360 °C. Ni at. % was varied from 30 to 56 and the resulting porous films were characterized by electron microscopy. High temperature molten salt allows the usual parting limit for dealloying (e.g. 55-60% Fe) to be bypassed slightly, because increasing surface diffusivity lowers its value. Ongoing work is focusing on the transition that must occur between this kind of "percolation dealloying" and a mechanism controlled by vacancy diffusion. The morphology of samples created by molten salt dealloying and aqueous dealloying methods at similar temperatures has been compared.
