All bacteria utilize iron, however in most environments the low solubility of Fe(III) restricts its bioavailability. To cope with iron stress, many bacteria synthesize siderophores, small molecule Fe(III) chelators that bind environmental Fe(III) for cellular uptake. Siderophores commonly utilize β-hydroxyaspartic acid functional groups to chelate Fe(III). Many β-OH-Asp siderophores are known, varying in both the number of these functional groups and in the stereochemistry at both chiral centers of the amino acid.  Furthermore, irradiating Fe(III) complexes of β-OH-Asp siderophores with UV light triggers a photochemical reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) coupled to oxidative breakdown of the siderophore. We report the photoreactivity of multiple Fe(III)-peptidic siderophores with β-OH-Asp, focusing on the effects of stereochemistry and the number of β-OH-Asp coordinating groups.<br/>
