The unprecedented numbers of interactions of diverse people with each other and with software and machines in the 21<sup>st</sup> century promises huge advances in science and society. However, for these advances to work for broad benefit, chemists need to hone a variety of skills to deal with complexity. Carbohydrates, especially when compared to proteins and nucleic acids, are incredibly diverse and complex—a fact that has made the study of glycans particularly challenging. However, by embracing complexity and diversity, scientists have made amazing progress in the last two decades in our understanding of the chemistry and biology of glycans. This talk will include reflections on how to continue this progress by broadening the participation of people and machines in glycochemistry and glycobiology from the perspective of the Chair-Elect/Chair/Past-Chair of the Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry from 2012-2014 and of a PI who has been developing automated methods to make and analyze sugars. A particular focus will be techniques to harness small-scale open-source automation to broaden participation in chemistry as well as to more quickly share the power of chemistry with other scientists and engineers<br/>
