AlCl3-XCl (X=Cu, Ag) solutions in aromatics have shown great potential in gas separation and chemical reaction. Most published reports are patents showing applications in separating alkanes/olefins, N2/CO. However, there is little literature reporting the chemical nature of this system, especially for existent forms of aluminum. Therefore, attentions are paid to analyze Al species for AlCl3-XCl (X=Cu, Ag) solutions in aromatics. In this research, aromatics were chosen as follows, benzene, toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene. Experiments were divided into two parts, synthesis and 27Al NMR characterization. The molar ratio of each aromatic to CuCl was fixed, altering the molar ratio of AlCl3 to CuCl. The influences of temperature and amount of solvent on the solubility of AlCl3 were also taken into consideration. Two peaks were observed for 27Al chemical shift for AlCl3 in xylene and benzene, different from known results that AlCl3 exists in nonpolar solvent in the form of Al2Cl6. Consequently, Only one strong Al peak was captured for AlCl3-CuCl solutions in aromatics. When the amount of AlCl3 increases, higher chemical shift was achieved. Additionally, different results with three peaks were shown for AlCl3-AgCl solutions in aromatics.
