<br/>Carbenes have become in the last years versatile ligands for catalysis. Among them mesionic carbenes (MICs) display low toxicity, high air stability, increased σ-donor ability in comparison with classical NHC’s, and the ability to stabilize different metal-oxidation states. All these characteristics makes them environmentally friendly and useful replacements to the more commonly used phosphines. In this context, we have recently shown that Ir/carbene-N complexes are highly flexible and competent catalysts for the reduction of ketones, aldehydes, imines, allylic alcohols, and most remarkably also unpolarized olefins under transfer hydrogenation conditions.<br/>In this presentation, we will present our latest research in the design of new efficient carbene-based catalysts for the: (a) acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols, (b) water oxidation, (c) transfer hydrogenation of ketones, imines and olefins and (d) asymmetric hydrogenation of olefins with poorly coordinative groups. We will also discuss mechanistic investigations using isotope labeling experiments, Hammet parameter correlations and DFT calculations.
