Powder materials are generally used in various applications due to their advantageous characteristics including high specific surface area, high dispersion in fluid, and feasible transfer of molecule and energy. However, when used in practical flow processes, since they can cause several problems such as pressure drops, loss of materials, difficulty of recovery and adverse recyclability, it is difficulty to use fine powder. In order to overcome the problems, the powder materials should be shaped in certain size range. The shaped materials can be easily separated, recycled, and well-handed. In this work, we synthesized the Bead-Shaped Porous Silica (BSPS) with tunable physical properties by template-assisted synthesis followed by calcination. We choose a silica which is one of representative adsorbent materials in practical process as a model system. The Bead-Shaped Porous Silica (BSPS) showed uniform particle size in diameter range of 1 ~ 5 mm with well developed porosity. We successfully controlled the physical properties of BSPS such as particle diameter, pore diameter, degree of pore uniformity by varying by synthetic parameters such as ratio of Silica to template and calcination temperature. We used the prepared BSPS as an adsorbent for adsorption of dye molecule in batch typed reactor as well as flow typed system. In this presentation, we will discuss details of the synthesis and property control of BSPS adsorbents and performance enhancement on dye adsorption in above two adsorption systems.
