Lasting and reliable glucose sensors are in demand for a variety of medical applications, in particular for the treatment of diabetes. Here, we report the development of gold-decorated nickel foam electrodes for use in non-enzymatic glucose sensors. These electrodes are selective for the glucose oxidation reaction over a wide range of glucose concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry are used to characterize the morphology of the electrodes, as well as their sensitivity and selectivity towards glucose in the presence of various possible interferants. In particular, we note the addition of sodium citrate after the deposition of the gold nanoparticles provides enhanced stability and cyclablility for these electrodes, without compromising their selectivity.
