A research-based lab curriculum will be presented in which students synthesize alpha-hydroxy nitrate derivatives of terpenes. Students use advanced 2-D NMR techniques (COSY, HSQC, HMBC & NOESY) to characterize and identify the products of their reactions. These compounds are important in the study of secondary organic aerosol formation.
