I will discuss how the basic tools that are currently at the foundation of complex ion spectroscopy were developed in the early days of the Zare group and evolved into a powerful analytical platform for spectrochemical analysis. This journey will take us from laser induced fluorescence of ions cooled in supersonic jets to double focusing tandem time-of-flight photofragmentation spectrometers to the present generation of cryogenically cooled ion sources for the application of vibrational and electronic spectroscopies to macromolecular ions prepared by ambient ionization techniques. Finally, I will present a few recent results from the Yale Structural Mass Spectrometry Laboratory ranging from fundamental studies of water to the structural characterization of drug metabolities.
