Artificial photosynthesis of ammonia by using N<sub>2</sub> and water under ambient temperature and pressure is an auspicious alternative for the high energy demanding Haber-Bosch process. Among the various photocatalysts, bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br or I) show advantages due to their unique properties: (1) the 2D layered structure, not only enlarges the surface area, but also induces an internal electric field, which accelerates the separation of photo-excited charge carriers; (2) the surface enriched oxygen vacancies on the {001} or {010} facets are essential for the chemical adsorption and activation of N<sub>2</sub>; (3) the high intrinsic oxygen evolution activity allows an overall reaction without using sacrificial reagents. In this talk, I will summarize latest developments. I will also discuss current material challenges.
