Emerging contaminants (ECs) from personal care products, artificial sweeteners, etc. are being detected in the global water cycle and aquatic organisms. This talk will focus on using Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (spICP-MS) as a powerful tool to characterize personal care product nanoparticles in different matrices. With appropriate sample preparation and dilution, spICP-MS enables the NPs to be detected from the elemental signals generated from individual particles as they pass through the plasma. MassHunter 4.5 uniquely allows the simultaneous determination of the particle number and size distribution, along with the concentrations of both the particles and the dissolved content of multiple elements of interest. Using the multi-element spICP-MS method, NPs containing all the measured elements (Al, Ti, and Zn) were identified in commercial sunscreens purchased from the market. All the results will be compared to their product labels.
