Herein, we demonstrate the C-H activation of alkanes using a dirhodium carboxylate catalyst immobilized within the metal-organic framework UiO-66. The choice of this host-guest system allows us to achieve similar yield and selectivity to a current C-H functionalization methodology without substrate control and extensive ligand synthesis. The dirhodium catalyst is immobilized within a porous host material, the metal-organic framework UiO-66, via aperture-opening encapsulation. The physical isolation of the catalyst prevents the dimerization of the reactive carbenoid intermediate, decoupling the reaction’s chemoselectivity from choice of substrate. The chemo- and regioselectivity of this host-guest catalyst will also be compared with the analogous homogeneous catalyst system.
