The photophysics and photochemistries of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are largely controlled by defects. The most common type of defect that is considered for luminescent applications reside at the nanocrystal surface, however, internal dopants such as transition metal ions can impart new functionality. The perturbation of the semiconductor band structure by the dopant ion is also dependent on the dopant's radial distribution in the nanocrystal. This talk will present our latest results on the controlled dopant incorportion during the self-assembly of CdS-based molecular nanoclusters, including Mn2+-substituted [Cd17S4(SPh)28]2–. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry coupled with dopant-specific spectroscopies (electron paramagnetic resonance and luminescence) allows for Mn2+ ions to be unambiguously located within the "core" sites of the cluster.
