High temperatures are crucial for traditional thermal Hopf cyclization of conjugated dienynes to produce benzene derivatives. Here we present results on ambient temperature chromium- triggered Hopf cyclizations by utilizing Cr(CO)3(acetonitrile)3 and Cr(CO)3(naphthalene) promoters. Chromium-mediated Hopf cyclizations were observed for a variety of dienyne substrates. In the course of these studies, an unexpected hydrogenation of alkene was discovered in acetone solvent. Mechanistic studies, including isotopic labeling were performed, and the hydrogen source was verified to be the solvent.
