Luminescent materials are widely employed in lighting phosphors, electronic display technologies, and sensing applications. Given their utility, these materials remain in high demand not only for optimized quantum efficiencies but also for novel design strategies and tailorable luminescent properties. Two common strategies for designing luminescent materials are the incorporation of emissive organic species or intrinsically luminescent metal centers. These strategies are often kept mutually exclusive because of added complexity and/or competition or quenching of luminescent transitions; however, our recent work with mixed lanthanide (La, Tb, Eu)-organic compounds suggest that unique and exploitable luminescent properties can be produced by combining emissive ligands and luminescent metal centers (e.g. sensitized lanthanides). These properties include: extension of excitation manifold into the visible region, dual emission originating from ligand and lanthanide components, and subsequent luminescence color tuning dependent not only on Ln doping percentages but also excitation wavelength. Similar properties were also exhibited and explored in low-percentage Eu doped bismuth-organic hybrid compounds, which are pursued as novel platforms for lanthanide emission. Discussed here will be an analysis of structural motifs, such as metal site composition, intermolecular packing, and sensitizing moieties, responsible for influencing the energetic transitions that impart observed luminescent behaviors in the solid state. Several new molecular species, consisting of La, Tb, Eu and/or Bi metals, terpyridine, phenanthroline, and thiophene carboxylate organic ligands, will be presented, which demonstrate the direct interplay between structure-property relationships.
