The activation of molecular oxygen is accomplished by complex biological systems containing metalloproteins. These proteins can have varied primary and secondary coordination spheres that influence the reactivity of these systems. Metal complexes designed to functionally mimic these large proteins have been synthesized to elucidate the mechanism. Specifically, the precise mechanism of O2 activation by non-heme iron oxygenases is of great interest to our group. To further these efforts, we have previously reported on iron tris(N-arylacetamide) complexes that react with molecular oxygen to form oxo-bridged dimers. It is unknown whether the mechanism proceeds by an inner sphere or outer sphere electron transfer. By determining the self-exchange rate for the iron(II/III) complexes we can obtain a better picture of the mechanism. This report describes the synthesis and characterization of complexes to this end.
